This past weekend, the Detroit Tigers won a game when umpires reviewed a play on the base paths. The original ruling of “out” was upheld, and Detroit had something to celebrate in what’s been a forgettable year so far.
It’s also a sign the replay system is working. Three calls were reviewed in that game. A situation like this would’ve been celebrated just a few years ago, but “purists” insist instant replay is destroying the game.
It’s an umpires’ job to get the call right. Managers can’t waste their time screaming over a bad call when they have a team to run. It’s clear baseball fans are a fickle bunch.
If you’re not going to get the call right, why bother having umpires at all?
